Suspended land
As barriers of language and mobility continue to dissolve, exploring place-bound identities becomes increasingly significant. This work was taken during my studies in Japan, where I was a “foreigner”.
The works incorporate symbolic elements such as urban-rural junctions, portraits, and discarded road signs. Shot far from urban centers, these images lack clear regional markers, but the subjects share an unconscious commonality. This subtle similarity speaks to the search for stability amid the fluidity of identity. At the moment the shutter is pressed, different body experiences are unconsciously released, bringing different visual experiences.
In a world where the connection to place is increasingly tenuous, this juxtaposition of Japan’s marginal areas highlights the tension between modern dislocation and a deeper longing for rootedness.
